What is a flame arrester?
A flame arrester is a device that permits gas passage through it to stop the propagation of a flame.
Storing flammable liquids or gases involves the risk of fire or explosion due to the ignition of flammable vapour. The use of flame arresters provides complete protection against explosions in risky environments. Flame Arresters prevent exterior flame entry into storage or processing tanks/systems via vent openings. Therefore, flame Arresters are sometimes referred to as Deflagration Flame Arresters. In-Line Flame Arrestors
In-Line Flame Arrestors offer protection at the initial stage of an explosion that may occur due to the ignition of an explosive gas mix inside the pipe. These units are usually installed in pipes to stop the flames from passing. In-line flame arresters are primarily used in systems that gather gases emitted by liquids and solids. Such systems are commonly used in many industries and are called vapour control systems.
End Of Line Flame Arrestors
End of line flame arrestors offers safety against atmospheric deflagration in cases of ignition source being outside the system. Since these flame arrestors are made to stop the propagation of flames within the pipping systems, they are placed close to the potential source of ignition. End-of-line flame arresters are primarily used in petroleum storage tank vents.
Functioning Of Flame Arrestors
Most flame arresters function by absorbing the heat moving at sub-sonic velocities from a flame front. This decreases the gas temperature below the auto-ignition temperature and stops the flame. The flame arrester element comprising metal plates, wire mesh, or crimped metal windings controls the flame front. This element pushes the gas through a small gap, creating a congested path for the flame front to pass through, thus stopping the flame.
